Alex grew up in Buffalo, NY and is a huge Buffalo Sabres and Buffalo Bills fan. He played all kinds of sports growing up but eventually focused most on ice hockey and soccer. Interestingly, he went to high school and played hockey for years alongside Rob Gronkowski and Jason Tartick, from The Bachelorette. He also dabbled along the way in some Ukrainian dancing, and used to attend dance camps over the summer which included ballet and character classes. He moved to Rochester, NY in 2007 to attend the University of Rochester, graduating in 2011 with a degree in Biochemistry and minor in Economics. He then started the MD/PhD program at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry that summer. After 3 years of research in Pharmacology his boss moved to Michigan and not wanting to start from scratch he entered back into medical school, graduating in 2018 and matching in Internal Medicine at Penn State Hershey.
While working in the lab he started doing Crossfit in July 2014 after making a bet with a friend who was a former college rower at Cornell to see who could be the first to row a sub 1:30 500m. That competitive aspect was something that was missing from just going to the gym and doing some bench and curls in the evenings. He was immediately hooked and started coaching at his local gym in Rochester (Flower City CrossFit) in Feb 2016. He trained alongside the 2018 regionals team from Flower City CrossFit in Rochester and hastried to maintain a semi decent level of fitness while in residency in Hershey. In his free time now, he plays in a hockey league at Hershey Park Arena, goes to Bills home and away games (season ticket holder), and spends time working on various research projects related to heart failure and interventional cardiology. He also enjoys eating pizza, ice cream, and watching movies.
